This paper discusses a Women in Development (WID) project called 'Women's Affairs' in Western Samoa, with particular reference to economic development for village women. This has involved training a group of local women in Apia who then adapt the program content and translate it into Samoan. They then help women in rural villages to improve their standard of living through income generation projects. The program focuses on reducing the language barriers, cultural issues and how to provide a program for the women while keeping the support of the men. This paper outlines the five step process involved in this program. Step one involved drawing on organisations in the community already working in the area of business development. Step two involved choosing eight local women to be trained to deliver the program in the rural villages. Step three aimed to decide on the pilot areas. Step four involved training the trainers and step five involved implementing the training process in the villages. The latter part of the paper describes the evaluation process and some of the challenges involved with the program and its implementation.
