This publication provides a summary of 'School-industry programs: national survey 1996', commissioned by the Australian Student Traineeship Foundation (ASTF) to identify the extent and characteristics of school-industry programs implemented throughout Australia. It follows up the first school-industry programs survey undertaken by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in 1995 which researched and reported on the existing scene and set a starting point for monitoring further growth. This summary presents an overview of school factors in the provision and growth of school-industry programs, examines the extent and role of learning in the workplace in school-industry programs and looks at student participation rates in school-industry programs. It also looks at program characteristics, assessment of workplace learning, articulation to education, training and work and identifies some of the characteristics of Extended Workplace Programs.
