Background information paper: supporting the report: management training in the agricultural industry

This report forms part of the Performance Indicators Project conducted during late 1995 and early 1996. It has been produced at the request of industry members to provide a starting point for further collation of data to become part of the shared knowledge base of those making decisions regarding industry training. This background report aims to provide information and references related to the focus client group (farmers and growers), their management training needs, current training provision and the funding system. It covers pastoral, grazing, cereal, legume crops, dairying intensive animal industries and production horticulture. This sector employs 80 per cent of all those involved in the industry, and has been identified as most as risk if management skills and knowledge are not significantly raised in the next 5-10 years. Part I of this background study reflects on the current situation presenting a farming industry profile, examining aspects of managing the farm and areas for education, training and learning. Part II looks at the vocational education and training (VET) sector, its mission, the major bodies and in particular the Horticultural and Rural Studies Program. This publication also contains a bibliography, appendices and tables.
