New directions in vocational education: issues and opportunities for the faculty

This paper is based on a seminar presentation in May - the third in the 1997 series of Dean's Papers. It addresses three current developments in vocational education and training (VET) in Australia: the establishment of a National Training System, the introduction of industry training into the senior secondary curriculum and the increased use of technology to deliver VET. It also considers the challenges and opportunities for tertiary education and training providers arising from these developments. The paper identifies opportunities for the Faculty of Education, Language and Community Services in this context, specifically to: contribute to the development and promotion of an educational framework to support the implementation of the National Training System; provide strategically effective assistance to schools offering industry training options in years 11 and 12; and develop and promote a locally relevant educational framework for the use of technology to enhance learning.
