This article discusses the changing nature of the workforce and the need for new styles of leadership, to meet the changes in the structure of organisations. New leadership competencies, the ability to motivate, build teams, resolve conflicts and mentor staff will be needed at every level in the high-involvement organisation. Leaders need to develop a learning environment that fosters people's skills, motivations and knowledge. The author provides an outline of traditional leadership roles, a description of high-involvement leadership and discusses the changing complexion of leadership and how these new roles require new skills for the future development of organisations.
