Nearly thirty years ago the Australian Institute of Training and Development (AITD) Training Needs Analysis and Evaluation group prepared a paper to help practitioners address this critical process. This document remains relevant, and the guidelines provide a sound base for adaptation. The entire document is republished in this and further issues of Training and Development in Australia during 1999. The model presented is a representation of a six-step process of identifying training needs. Step five examines whether the original training need is met and justified and step six outlines how to design the training program. A brief example is also provided of how the six steps are implemented within a company.
