Development centres - a group process focusing on individuals

Despite worldwide acceptance of development centres, they were not widely accepted or used in Australia. However, in recent years they have become more commonly used in recruitment, particularly in the Eastern states. This brief article describes the concept of development centres. The process involves a group of participants performing a number of job related exercises and activities whilst being assessed by a panel of observers. Many organisations are using development centres to determine the promotion potential and training needs of existing staff and to assist in the selection of new staff. A case study is presented which provides an example of how the concept works in practice.
