This brief article discusses the role of mentoring in developing people within the workplace. Now, with increased focus on eliminating barriers and enhancing opportunities for women and minorities, corporations are attempting to design formalised mentoring programs that provide opportunities for development. These programs are focused on providing opportunities particularly for those who have traditionally been excluded from the formal mentoring process. It briefly comments on the U.S. Department of Labor's Report on the Glass Ceiling Initiative, which identified women's lack of access to mentoring as one of the barriers that contribute to the glass ceiling. It then examines mentoring systems, outlines competencies for mentors and provides a guide to establishing an effective mentoring program.
