For generations, mentors have provided guidance and discipline for young people and helped them become effective leaders. Scholars who study organisations have argued that mentoring is essential for personal and organisational development. At the same time, there are problems and risks associated with mentoring that can have adverse effects on both the individual and the organisation. This article provides an analysis of the mentoring system, the advantages and disadvantages, cross-gender mentoring and formal versus informal mentoring.
