Training and development in Britain: 1999

This article reflects on a national survey conducted in Britain by the Institute of Training and Development during January 1999. It involved telephone interviews with 800 training managers or the most senior person responsible for training in a range of organisations. Questions were asked about patterns of training expenditure, and the links between training policies and workplace practices. Data was collected on delivery mechanisms for training, including techniques utilising new technology. Questions were also asked about how people enter the training profession and the skills training managers require for their present activities. This article also presents data on the patterns of training expernditur in the UK, the nature of the link between training policies and workplace practices and the changes occurring to training methods and delivery mechanisms.
