In this paper we outline a collaborative project between two organisations, the South Australian Department for Correctional Services (DCS) and the University of South Australia, to develop an industry based graduate certificate for correctional group workers. Higher community intolerance of crimes has led to calls for increased effectiveness of law and order strategies (Hall 1997). However, whereas crime requires a focus on core criminogenic factors that predispose individuals to offend, humanitarian concerns also suggest the need for a range of options that engage offenders creatively in their own rehabilitation. Criticisms abound which highlight the ineffectiveness of traditional custodial approaches to managing crime, according to White and Haines (1996), Hogg and Brown (1998) Finnane (1997), with voices also emphasising the economic harmonic in alternative approaches.
