The author reviews the significant changes made by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in 1996 in their revised occupational classification system - referred to as 'ASCO second edition'. He explains the hierarchical skill ranking system and the increase to nine major groups (from the previous eight) and the five distinct skill levels. He then looks at employment growth, by occupation, since 1993, applying the concordance formulae for the earlier years and he examines the types of new jobs created, the differences in the pattern of employment growth of men and women and the growth of female managers. The last section deals with changes in the skill levels and there is a support table showing the change in share of employees by sex and skill level. Cully speculates on reasons for these changes.
