The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) was contracted by the State Training Board of Victoria on behalf of the Australian National Training Association (ANTA) to examine the barriers to the employment of apprentices in the electrical, electronic and communications industry and to consider reform options for industry training. This is a valuable research document that quantifies previously anecdotal evidence of the decline in apprentices in this industry sector, comparing the changes in the social and work environments, and analysing the future characteristics of the electrical, electronic and communications industry, the demands of its clients, and the nature of the required skills. Findings and recommendations are given.
