Throughout the world, increasing attention is being paid to the relationship between a general education and vocational training. This paper presents a brief and provocative overview of options in relation to vocational education in the Northern Metropolitan region of Victoria. It focuses on vocational education and training (VET) within the context of Year 11 and 12 courses and in relation to the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). This paper argues that to be effective, vocational education must be considered in a broader context and presents some practical options for school development ranging from small and specific steps to larger whole school change. It also presents an 'audit tool' as a way of starting discussions on priorities for change.
