Report to the IT ITAB and InfoComp: analysis of information technology course effectiveness

This report for InfoComp, focuses on three IT (Information Technology) courses offered by TAFE; Computer Science, information systems; Business/administration data processing; and Electronic, computer, communications engineering technologies. In 1996, 67 000 people Australia-wide were enrolled in publicly funded vocational courses of 200 hours or more in the IT field, almost all enrolled in TAFE. Between 1994-1996, total numbers in these courses increased by 15 per cent. The key objectives of this analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of current courses and to develop a broader information base relating to vocational education and training courses for forward planning by InfoComp. Key findings reflected that courses are performing below the national average on several critical indicators, such as TAFE graduate employment outcomes and graduates' opinions on their courses. The study also found that TAFE graduates are above the national average in terms of the proportion going on to further education. The report highlights that further research is needed to identify the causes of high post-course unemployment for IT graduates and to develop strategies to improve their employment opportunities.
