Competencies and managerial effectiveness

In this article, the author argues that the current and future success of organisations depends heavily on the collective effectiveness of the management team and the leadership they provide. An overview of research efforts aimed at identifying generic managerial competencies is presented with tables containing the outcomes of selected studies. The author contends that the major contribution of human resource practitioners should be to provide a clear focus on the identification of the essential competencies required to increase the ability of the organisation to achieve its specific objectives.
