Self-managed learning

This article outlines the concept and process of self-managed learning (SML) as a way of addressing individual and organisational learning needs. SML is defined as a process in which individuals decide the content and method of their own learning in conjunction with others, within their current situational context and framework. Some brief examples of SML in practice in the UK are mentioned, and it is concluded that SML provides a means of ensuring that generic competencies essential to individual and organisational learning, are identified, assessed and developed.
