This keynote paper was presented at the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) 1998 conference: Industry training outlook '98, held in Sydney, from 12-13 October 1998. An industry perspective on the changing world of work is given in the context of the Australian Industry Group (AIG), a relatively new organisation representative of employers across most sectors of the economy, but especially in manufactruing, construction and information technology. The employment environment for manufacturing is considered, and the role played by New Apprenticeships in training reform is discussed.
