This keynote paper was presented at the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) 1998 conference: Industry training outlook '98, held in Sydney, from 12-13 October 1998. In it, the role the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), the peak national business organisation, needs to take in leadership in the development and pursuit of reform within training is considered. There is a general look at the role of employer organisations in relation to vocational education and training (VET) reform, and factors that influence employers and influence their decisions are looked at. Predicted trends are given, and the type of VET system industry wants is described.
