This report is a sequel to 'Mapping the public administration industry in South Australia: report one: occupations, employers and employees 1996-1997' (TD/TNC 57.35), and maps the training needs of, and training provision for, the six public administration industry sectors, through documentation and analysis of two comprehensive surveys. The level of participation by key stakeholders facilitated an identification of key problems or issues associated with the process of matching the South Australian public administration industry's training needs with training provision, an important contribution to the knowledge base necessary for future strategic planning for both industry agencies and training providers. Other documents arising from the mapping project may be found at TD/TNC 57.37 and TD/TNC 57.38.

As part of the mission of the South Australian Public Administration Industry Training Advisory Body (SA PAITAB), comprehensive information about the public administration industry in South Australia is required. To this end, a mapping project of industry sectors was undertaken. This report is a profile of the public administration industry by way of occupational coverage, the numbers and characteristics of employees across the industry and factors currently influencing the industry. It incorporates the findings of the first two parts of the overall mapping study covering Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO) coding and employee and agency statistics.

Since January 1997 the South Australian Public Administration Industry Training Advisory Body (SA PAITAB) has completed two major mapping surveys of the public industry administration industry in South Australia. Using this data, this industry training plan (ITP) has been developed in accordance with the requirements of the State Training Authority (STA) to provide comprehensive data on vocational education and training (VET) in the public administration industry and to analyse critically the trends identified from the data. The ITP is intended to assist stakeholders make informed decisions about industry priorities and training needs over the next three years, and to assist the STA in allocating public resources. Other documents arising from the mapping project may be found from TD/TNC 57.35 to TD/TNC 57.37.
