This paper traces the historical development of Western Australia's apprenticeship system. In a system that has seen major changes over the years, an interesting theme is that apprenticeships have remained essentially unchanged despite the challenges of significant social, economic, educational, and policy changes, suggesting that the traditional mode of apprenticeship training has major enduring strengths yet has been largely unable to extend beyond traditional boundaries. This raises the question of whether apprenticeship in Western Australia will change to accommodate a wider range of training needs.
