This paper was presented at the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) 1998 conference: Industry training outlook '98, held in Sydney, from 12-13 October 1998. It first suggests that while agriculture, forestry and fishing are often seen combined as an 'industry' it is more accurate to see them as three fundamentally different industries, with some functional similarities and some natural and geographical similarities. The paper then focuses on the forest and forest products industry, addressing key training issues in the forest and forest products industry, the outlook for training, and offering solutions to identified issues. Innovative training practices are described and research areas suggested.
