The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) regularly surveys employers on a range of issues. This paper looks at employers, and industry generally, important clients of the vocational education and training (VET) system, focusing on issues that affect employer participation in VET. Economic conditions dictate that employer involvement in training should be linked to direct benefit to the business in profit and human resources. Employers have become critical of the reforms in the training system which have not produced expected outcomes. Employers would like: to be involved in training; a simple, flexible and responsive system; minimum bureaucratic involvement; an agreed national framework for training outcomes and qualifications; and full introduction of user choice. Issues that affect employers are general economic conditions and profitability; a ready supply of a willing and trained labour force; a responsive VET system; and a supportive training culture operating from a national level to each enterprise. The complete proceedings of this conference in one volume may be found at TD/TNC 53.04.
