Competitiveness is the key

This paper represents a keynote address from the conference, and focuses on competitiveness in the training market. Vocational education and training (VET) is a relatively large and diverse market, yet it does not act as a market, making the pursuit of market-based reform in VET important for the future. User choice will be implemented in the New Apprenticeships but more needs to be done to create a truly demand-driven system. The VET sector must become highly competitive to support the highly competitive industry it services, facing domestic competition and competition in the global market place. TAFE must respond effectively to local demand yet still take advantage of opportunities globally. The complete proceedings of this conference in one volume may be found at TD/TNC 53.04.
