This paper analyses the role that adult and community education (ACE) plays in vocational education and training (VET), and particularly concentrates on the contribution of ACE in the marketplace. ACE is very diverse and offers a wide range of services, and while the traditional view is that they are undertaken for personal enrichment, research shows that a significant proportion of participants are vocationally motivated. A greater acceptance of ACE by industry and government to promote an efficient and locally responsive VET system is called for. The complete proceedings of this conference in one volume may be found at TD/TNC 53.04.
