The public system of vocational education and training (VET) is government's main instrument of influence on the policies, plans and directions for the sector in Australia. It must not be presupposed, however, that this influence is all powerful but it can make a significant difference in many areas of education and training effort. Some of its powers are declining as, among other things, the system changes to more deregulated processes. This paper explores some of the emerging issues for government in exerting influence through the Australian public VET system.
