Individual differences in the patterns of leisure pursuits of technical and further education students in Australia

The purpose of this paper is to present the first set of data on the leisure interests of technical and further education students in Australia. The participants in this study comprised 426 students who completed the Leisure Interests Inventory which focuses on the pattern of general leisure involvement as well as 24 specific leisure activities. Results indicated considerable leisure involvement, often exceeding that of educational time involvement. There were few significant differences between genders or between full time and/or part time students. Principal components analysis of the 24 specific leisure activities indicated four dimensions on which there were significant gender and age interactions. The potential benefits of studying the interactions between extra-curricular activities and vocational educational settings are outlined.
