Expenditure on education and training: estimates by sector and course

This paper, a version of which appears in 'Australia's youth: reality and risk', Dusseldorp Skills Forum, 1998, provides a range of data on expenditure in order to contribute to the debate on the size and shape of funding of education and training, and provide a context for more informed judgement on the big questions. First it provides an overview of aggregate expenditures on education and training and structured training by employers, then it explores the expenditures allocated to various sectors and fields of education and training, offering some illustrative examples of spending in the various pathways. The paper represents a work in progress, and the data presented are subject to revision both in the basic data and the method of analysis, and are presented as a basis for further investigation.
