This paper, an edited version of a speech entitled 'Vocational education and training in schools' delivered at the Education and employment conference, Darling Harbour, Sydney, 13 March 1998, reviews vocational education and training (VET) in schools in NSW, and argues that no educational or social case can be made for separate pathways between education and training. An agenda for change is offered, and future developments in education, training, and employment in the 21st century are discussed.
