Vocational education in the secondary school setting in the UK is at a point of considerable and important development. Momentum was already strong prior to the general election of 1997. The philosophy, agenda and emerging policies of the new government seem set to increase that momentum raising the prospect of further considerable change for practitioners in the field. This paper attempts to update Australian colleagues in the broader issues and developments involved and tries to paint the bigger picture rather than sketch the detail of individual projects.
