Structured, accredited on-the-job training programs are recommended for small business, particularly regional small business, in this article. Training programs for small business need to be affordable and cost effective, suit the real time constraints of the workplace and acknowledge work performance as demonstrated learning. The article describes on-the-job traineeships provided by the Furnishing Industry Association of Australia (FIAA) for specific sectors of the furnishing industry. These traineeships are nationally accredited, articulating with further study and formal trade courses in TAFE. The success of the FIAA traineeships is based on commitment by the three partners in the training process: the FIAA, the enterprises and the trainees, and traineeship employment outcomes have been found to be very positive.
