Peer-mentoring in tertiary education: a review of programs

The initial proposal for this project was to locate and analyse literature on peer tutoring practices in both Australian and overseas tertiary institutions, including TAFE colleges, community colleges, polytechnics and universities. Many of the TAFE institutions contacted reported that no formal or structured program of peer support existed but described various informal practices currently in operation. By comparison, the university sector, both in Australia and overseas, had developed and implemented a range of structured peer tutoring and peer mentoring models, a representative sample of which are included in this report. The model proposed in this report for TAFE incorporates examples of good practice in approach, procedure and delivery identified in the models examined. It has the flexibility to accommodate the needs of students from various target groups and can be adapted to suit local conditions and requirements.
