This investigation provides, within the context of general student service provision in TAFE, an assessment by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students of factors promoting and inhibiting academic achievement, and the range and characteristics of and conditions applying to student services which might promote academic achievement. This was intended to provide student services personnel, college administrators, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and system administrators with: an approved understanding of factors influencing retention and success rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students; an assessment of the types of interventions and student service initiatives which may promote academic achievement by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students; and a basis for policy planning and evaluation of services for Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander students.
