This report documents the outcomes of over three years of national trialling of the Mayer Key Competencies, from the perspective that all young people need to develop this set of generic competencies to participate effectively in emerging forms of work, and also to enhance lifelong learning. It is shown that the Key Competencies assist in preparing young people for the emerging workforce by providing a structured learning environment for the practical application of knowledge, skills and understandings. Additionally, a common language for discussion which takes in schools, vocational education and training, and business and industry is developed. The pilot projects have demonstrated that the Key Competencies can be taught, learned, assessed and reported; are compatible with general education purposes; complement existing curricula, teaching methods and assessment techniques; answer the needs of employers; reflect what workers in high performance workplaces are actually achieving; and answer the needs of both teachers and students.
