Part-time youth employment and training: evidence from the Australian youth survey

This article examines the labour market and training experience of young, part-time employed workers using individual-level data from the Australian Youth Survey (AYS). Part-time employees invariably receive less off-the-job training than do full-time employees. They also do not receive the benefits associated with a more broadly based training program. In terms of the dynamics of the youth labour market, the authors found that the majority of young, part-time job holders do not find full-time employment quickly. For example, a significant number of them remained in part-time employment throughout the three-year period under investigation.
