The purpose of this study was to identify the key attributes required to progress the development of a research culture in the New Zealand polytechnic system. Using an action research model, a development programme was initiated for a group of staff from four polytechnics who had recently become involved in degree teaching. Participant and facilitator perceptions and evaluation of how the process had contributed to research practice were obtained through the collection of interview data. Key attributes which emerged from the study are discussed together with related issues for institutions to address as they seek to encourage the development of a research ethos.
