Report to ACTRAC on stage one of the laboratory science technician national curriculum project

This project included the development of an inventory of tasks and skills for laboratory science technicians. A generic task list of 256 items was developed. The project found that training in these tasks needs to be coupled with a firm grounding in the basic sciences to produce broadly trained technicians capable of transferring skills and acquiring specialised skills on the job. Other findings included: curricula should specify learning experiences that encourage the development of generic competencies; computer training is needed, and should be included in future curricula; the inclusion of basic electronics and hands-on instrumentation modules in all courses is advocated; mathematical skills needed should be identified and included in the core modules.
