This article defines the terms computer based learning (CBL) and computer managed learning (CML), and describes the current need for and some developments of these methods. Although both CBL and CML are well-established, until recently neither has reached the potential that has always tantalised supporters. The situation is changing as educators turn towards student-centred materials and look for innovative and motivating ways to teach their courses and find user-friendly programmes on which to develop the materials.
