This article discusses the learning that people gain from experience, and the sharper focus that recent government moves towards workplace reform have given to the existing respect in Australia for prior learning. The newly created Australian Standards Framework (ASF) defines eight levels of competency, which are being linked to industrial award classifications, which is likely to bring an increased demand for recognition of prior learning, and great challenges to those guiding the new competency-based education and training system into place.
