Competency-based standards have a number of uses for professions. The development of these standards in the TAFE teaching profession could provide invaluable information to improve TAFE teacher training, and could be used to recognise the skills developed both formally and informally by teachers during their career. This paper suggests how competency-based standards can be used to improve training for TAFE teachers by maximising skill acquisition in the training program. It will focus on that component of the training program designed to increase teaching related skills.
