This paper was one of the case studies prepared for a national study funded by the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission. It looks at the issue of staff professional development in distance education at the TAFE External Studies College in WA. It describes some of the college's innovative approaches to staff development, such as the orientation program, the 'Guide to the writing of distance education materials' and the work of the Education Development Department within the college. Staff attitudes toward their professionalism and some of the problems they perceive are also discussed.
