Curriculum development for education and training: a personal perspective

Thirty years ago a polarisation occurred between education and training. The theory and practice of curriculum development began to develop separately, with little communication between them. This separation was detrimental to both. With the introduction of the Training Guarantee Bill, now is the time to break down the barriers and recognise that training and education have a lot to learn from each other. This paper summarises the wealth of curriculum theory and practice some centres of education have to offer government and industry trainers. Our universities have accumulated forty years of research and scholarship in the areas of needs analysis, curriculum design and development (including the selection of content and writing of objectives), the production of curriculum materials and resources, dissemination, implementation and evaluation. Commerce, industry and government should be prepared to call on this knowledge to assist them in their development of training programs.
