This paper describes a TAFE National Centre for Research and Development curriculum project in which a series of problem-solving exercises called 'skills units for use by teachers, supervisors, students and trainees in the hospitality industry' were developed. The project aimed to define a set of skills applicable across a range of occupations and to find an effective method for teaching those skills. It was anticipated that this would lead to the teaching of a common core of skills.
