Skills required of graduates: one test of quality in Australian higher education

This study forms part of the review of the quality of higher education in Australia that is currently undertaken by [the National Board of Employment, Education and Training] NBEET. The study focuses on identifying the qualifications, experience, skills and personal qualities sought by employers when recruiting graduates, and identifies the extent to which employers’ expectations of new graduates are being met. The findings indicate that communication and social skills are the key skills requested by employers of both new and experienced graduates. Generally, new graduates are considered to be lacking in these skills, and they are also considered to have limited ability to apply their academic learning to the workplace.
