This is an edited version of a report submitted by the author to the Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DEETYA) of research into gender equity issues in the Australian higher education sector. This edited report was produced with a view to making the central findings of the report more widely available. The aim of the research was to identify the cultural and structural barriers to the achievement of equitable employment outcomes for academic and general staff women and the implications of these barriers for staffing policies and management practices in Australian univeristies.
