This book reports on a research study involving a sample of over one hundred students from the Faculty of Aboriginal and Islander Studies (FAIS) and other faculties of the University of South Australia. While the study aimed to concentrate on the factors affecting the performance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander groups, numbers of non-indigenous participants were included as a control group. The survey looked at a wide range of variables including gender; ethnicity; educational background; mode of study; family situation; and finances. Wherever possible statistical analysis was used to test for significance. Many of the factors were found to contribute to the inadequate level of persistence and performance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, but no single factor was found to be the sole reason for students dropping out.
