The Tasmanian Aboriginal Education Consultative Committee (TAECC) was formed as an advisory body to the Minister for Education in the preparation and implementation of educational policy for Aborigines in Tasmanian schools. At the instigation of the TAECC, this study into further education was undertaken with a grant from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs in 1981, by the Research Branch. An earlier study (Randriamahefa, 1979) had highlighted the low educational outcomes of Aboriginal children, indicating needs of one Aboriginal community in Tasmania which could be met by the further education system. Information was mainly gathered by interviews of Aboriginal students, community members and representatives of Aboriginal organisations. Needs identified included more awareness of further education provisions, support through both financial and tutorial assistance, more opportunities in country areas, literacy and numeracy course; pre-trade and pre-vocational courses, preference for Aboriginal tutors; and management skills for Aborigines actively working in community organisations.
