In this article Rod McDonald discusses the issue of what action is needed to achieve the vision of a respected, world class VET system. The following three key areas are identified as requiring attention by Australian vocational education and training professionals: new kids - involvement of more young Australians in the education and training system; new work - changing nature of work; and new actors, new productions - changing nature of classrooms. The paper concludes by answering the following questions that need to be addressed if TAFE institutes are not to become empty shell representing the way in which training used to happen: (1) where does this place a TAFE institute in the year 2000? and (2) what value do TAFE teachers add?
