This report summarises the AEU National TAFE Council's January 1999 meeting. Issues considered included: why people continue education after school; their motivation, selection of course and training institution, criteria for choices, ability to judge the quality of courses; and the extent of pre-course information and counselling. The competitive training market, its impact on TAFE and results from a recent Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) report on Education and Training in Australia (1998) were discussed. The Council defined the essential qualities of a successful TAFE system (which may be used for a 'charter' for future national 'TAFE Works', campaigns) in terms of the following stakeholders: students; educators; industry and employers; and the community.
