This learning activities material has been developed for use within the module 'Microprocessor applications 1'. It has been designed to be used in a self-paced, competency-based, well-resourced situation. The module looks at some of the important peripheral devices that make the computer useful, as well as their basic principles of operation. It also looks at exactly how these are interfaced to a computer, and the different interfacing circuits that may be used. An introduction to data communications is included. Topics are: (1) data transfer techniques, (2) LSI support ICs, (3) clock and reset circuits, (4) computer input/output devices, and (5) computer displays. A bibliography and answers to the self-checking exercises have been appended.
